Site FAQ's |
| |
|
The text on this site looks
too small/too large -- how do I change it? |
 | For some people it
may be necessary to increase/decrease the text size by using the Text Resize
feature in your browser.
 | If you are using
Internet Explorer, go to the top of
your menu bar, click on View/Text Size/and click on your preferred
font size (small, medium or large). Do not use Largest as this
will cause the text to over run itself. Be advised that this
will affect how you view text on all websites. |
 | If you are using
AOL go to Settings/Font and Text/ click
to open, then go to Text Settings and click on small, medium or Large.
Be advised that this will affect how you view text on all websites. |
 | If using
Foxfire, go to resize: Go to Edit
Preferences. Then Content. Increase/Decrease the font size in the
Fonts & Color Section where it says Size. |
 | Note:
A quick way to increase/decrease font size in
most browsers is to hold down the
Control key while using the scroll wheel on your mouse.
Scrolling one way will set a smaller sized font and scrolling in the
opposite direction will set an increased sized font. Be
advised that this will affect how you view text on all websites. |
 | If members or
visitors will send us the instructions for increasing/decreasing the font size
in their browsers, we will be happy to include them. |

|
|
How do I
interpret OFA and CERF certification numbers and PennHIP scores? |
 | Using Ashlinn’s OFA hip certification number,
let’s break it down into its “parts”: SLH-134G24F-PI
The SLH is the three letter designation given to Shiloh Shepherds.
134 is the number of Shilohs issued a hip certification, i.e., Ashlinn
was the 134th Shiloh to be certified for hips.
G is the rating the OFA Radiologists gave Ash. G stands for Good, E
for Excellent and F for Fair. All three of these designations can earn
certification.
24F stands for Ash’s age (24 months) at the time her X-rays were
submitted for evaluation and that she is Female.
PI stands for “Permanent Identification which can be a microchip or
tattoo. NOPI stands for No Permanent Identification.
|
 | Using Ashlinn’s OFA elbow certification number,
let’s break it down: SLH-EL23F24-PI
The SLH is the three letter designation given to Shiloh Shepherds.
EL23, EL is the test designation for elbows and 23 is the number of
Shilohs issued an elbow certification, i.e., Ashlinn was the 23rd
Shiloh to be certified for elbows.
With elbows the only passing designation for certification is
“Normal,” all others show up as levels of DJD.
24F stands for Ash’s age (24 months) at the time her X-rays were
submitted for evaluation and that she is Female.
PI stands for “Permanent Identification which can be a microchip or
tattoo. NOPI stands for No Permanent Identification.
|
 | Using Ashlinn’s cardiac certification number,
let’s break it down: SLH-CA2/29F/C-PI/2002
The SLH is the three letter designation given to Shiloh Shepherds
CA2 CA is the test designation for cardiac and 2 is the number of
Shilohs issued a heart certification, i.e., Ashlinn was the 2nd Shiloh
to have her heart certified.
With the heart the only passing designation for certification is
“Normal,” all others show up as grades of heart murmurs.
29F stands for Ash’s age (29 months) at the time she was evaluated by
a cardiologist and that she is Female.
C- stands for Cardiologist (you could also see a P here for General
Practitioner or an S for Specialist). OFA recommends cardiac
evaluations be done by Cardiologists, but they will certify
evaluations done by General Practitioners and Specialists.
PI stands for “Permanent Identification which can be a microchip or
tattoo. NOPI stands for No Permanent Identification.
2002 stands for the year Ash was certified.
|
 | Using Ashlinn’s thyroid certification number,
let’s break it down: SLH-TH5/29F-PI/2002.
The SLH is the three letter designation given to Shiloh Shepherds
TH5 is the test designation for thyroid and 5 is the number of Shilohs
issued a thyroid certification, i.e., Ashlinn was the 5th Shiloh to
have her thyroid certified.
With thyroid the only passing designation for certification is
“Normal.” The other three designations are: Positive autoimmune
thyroiditis, Positive compensative autoimmune thyroiditis or
Idiopathically reduced thyroid function.
29F stands for Ash’s age (29 months) at the time she had her blood
drawn for a thyroid assay and that she is Female.
PI stands for “Permanent Identification which can be a microchip or
tattoo. NOPI stands for No Permanent Identification.
2002 stands for the year Ash was certified. OFA recommends dogs be
re-certified for thyroid every year or every two years especially if
being used for breeding.
|
 | Using Ashlinn’s CERF (eye) certification number,
let’s break it down: SHS-108/2002
SHS is the three letter designation given to Shiloh Shepherds
108 is the number of Shilohs issued a CERF certificate i.e., Ashlinn
was the 108th Shiloh to have her eyes certified.
2002 stands for the year Ash was certified. A CERF certificate is only
“good” for one year. It is recommended that dogs used for breeding
have a current CERF certification especially if there are eye issues
in the line.
|
 | PennHIP Scores. PennHIP uses a three point
evaluation process to assess hips. One of them is called a Distraction
Index (DI) and it is a quantitative measurement of hip joint laxity.
Each hip is measured and given a DI score. Our breed currently has 347
Shilohs with PennHIP scores in the PennHIP database. Our breed median
is .41 (PennHIP’s advice is to only breed dogs who score at or below
the median of .41 to reduce the risk of hip dysplasia and to reduce
the median of a breed down to .30 where PennHIP believes the risk of
hip dysplasia is much lower). We currently have a range of .19 to .81.
|
 | Using Ashlinn’s PennHIP scores at 8 months, L.48
and R.50, this means that Ashlinn scored basically 50 percent out of
socket on both hips (and because of this was removed from my breeding
program). The higher the DI score, the greater risk of hip dysplasia.
For most breeds including our own, a DI of .30 or below is what we
should be shooting for. Because of our small gene pool, if we can
limit ourselves to breeding at or below the median for now we can work
to reduce dysplasia in our lines. Ashlinn was OFA Certified Good at 2
years. At 5 years, Ashlinn was re-Xrayed and evaluated as mildly
dysplastic by a radiologist.

site, Disease Information:

How come I
cannot access the Member’s Only page? |
 | The Member’s Only page requires a password and
is reserved for members in good standing of the ShilohZone chat group.
You must qualify for membership and adhere to the SZ Philosophy
(insert link), SZ Bill of Rights (insert link) and SZ Standard
Operating Procedures (insert link). If you are interested in joining
the ShilohZone chat group, go to the Contact Us page and enter your
email addy where it says “Subscribe to the ShilohZone” or click here:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ShilohZone/ |
|
|
What is
available on the Member’s Only page? |
 | We offer members of the ShilohZone chat group
special features. Currently members can find copies of the SZ
Observer, our official newsletter; statistical reports compiled by the
WC using Zone and OFA statistics and a news page giving members a
heads up on new or planned site features and events. We hope to add to
this section based on feedback from Zoners. |
|
|
What is the
ShilohZone chat list? |
 | The ShilohZone chat list
is a place for Shiloh enthusiasts who share similar beliefs and values
regarding the promotion and protection of the breed and the benefit of
sharing data—good, bad and ugly. |
|
|
How do I
submit a question for the FAQ page? |
 | Two ways—at the bottom of each section of FAQs there is a
statement that says: “Still have a
(insert category) question? Please use the Contact Us page to submit your question-you can request that your
question be added to the site, or answered by private email.”
You can click on the link or you can go directly to the
Contact Us
page and use the box designated “How can we help you?” |
|
|
How does a Shiloh
qualify for the Hall of Fame page? |
 | Hall of Famers are chosen by the ShilohZone
Moderator with the counsel of others. A Shiloh must have demonstrated
skills or achievements above and beyond the norm or shown dedication,
bravery, or outstanding qualities to make it into the SZ Hall of Fame. |
|
|
How do I
access the SZ World Class web site from the Zone site? |
 | Click on the WC button on the navigation bar or
go out to the splash page and click on the WC key. |
|
|
How do I
search the Portrait Table or Health & Temperament (H&T) Table?
|
 | The site itself has a search function located
just below the navigation bars. However, the Database Tables are
currently configured as pdf files. In order to search a pdf file you
must use the pdf search function associated with Adobe Reader (a free
software program you can download from the Adobe web site). Once Adobe
is installed, when you click on any of the database tables, a tool bar
will come up and all you have to do is click on the binoculars (the
icon for the search function) and type the search word or string you
are looking for. Note, the search function will only recognize
information contained in the table open. For example, if you opened
the A-E Table, do not expect to find Goodnight’s Ashlinn O’PAW—this
dog will be in the F-G Table. These instructions are repeated at the
top of each Table for your convenience. |
|
|
How do I
search the rest of the web site? |
 | The web site has a search function that is
separate from the Database Table search function (see question above).
The site search function is located at the end of navigation bars on
each page. |
|
|
How do I
find the latest article? |
|
|
|
Still have an Outcross
question? Please use the Contact Us page to submit your question-you
can request that your question be added to the site, or answered by
private email. |

What is the Keys of Victory Program? |
 | The Keys of Victory
Program is designed to recognize and reward owners and breeders who
are working hard to improve the gene pool through health and
temperament testing. Testing results, good, bad or ugly provide the
kind of information necessary for breeders and buyers to make better
decisions regarding the future of Shiloh Shepherds. The SZ Keys of
Victory is open to ALL Shiloh owners and breeders that do health and
temperament testing. Besides the health and/or temperament testing
being done the only other requirement is that your Shiloh's data is
also entered in the Online Database. |
|
|
What is the LMI Keys of
Victory Program? |
 | The Littermate Information or LMI Keys of
Victory Program is designed to recognize and reward breeders who
demonstrate their dedication to tracking health and temperament issues
in their lines. The LMI Keys of Victory sets the bar high and challenges breeders
to go above and beyond to protect the gene pool. |
|
|
What is the difference
between “status” and “level” in the Keys of Victory Program? |
 | The Keys of Victory is based on two different
criteria: 1) Status which refers to the number and type of test and 2)
Level which refers to repeated tests or test results from a special
category. For an example, let's say that your Shilohs has:
PennHIP testing (1 status point)
OFA Elbow Prelim testing (1 status point)
OFA Cardiac testing (1status point)
CERF certification (1 status point)
CGC temperament test (1 status point)
ATTS temperament test (1 level point)
In this example the Shiloh already had a CGC so the ATTS is counted as
a level not a status. So this dog has 5 STATUS points which puts your
Shiloh at GOLD STATUS, and one LEVEL point which brings it up to GOLD
STATUS LEVEL 2. |

How do I know if my Shiloh
qualifies for a Key of Victory? |
|
|
|
How do I submit my Shiloh for
a Key of Victory? |
|
|
|
I am a member of the
ShilohZone Yahoo Chat list and I have already given consent for my
Shiloh's data to be used in the Online Database -- do I still need to
fill out the Online Entry Form for my Shiloh to receive a Keys of
Victory Certificate? |
 | Yes, but if your Shiloh's
data is up-to-date you will not need to fill in those sections of the
form. Just type "data already in Online Database" in that
section. |
|
|
Why it is necessary for the
webmasters to verify the health and temperament data that I turn in for
the Database and the Keys of Victory? |
 | In order for the
ShilohZone Open Database and the Keys of Victory Certificates to
retain integrity it is important that we are able to assure those
using the Database and Keys of Victory Certificates (both breeders and
puppy buyers) that we have done everything possible to ascertain that
the data entered is correct. |
|
|
How do I upgrade my Shiloh’s
Key of Victory? |
 | You can fill out the Open
Database online entry form and click the box that says “I am
updating* my dog's information because it has attained a new
Keys of Victory level.” |
|
|
How do I know if my Shiloh
litter qualifies for an LMI Key of Victory |
 | You can review the SZ LMI
Keys of Victory
Qualification Rules that can be accessed on the Keys of
Victory page. |

|
What is the difference
between “status” and “level in the LMI Keys of Victory Program? |
 | The LMI Keys of Victory
is based on three separate criteria: 1) Status consists of the number
of qualifying tests conducted and 2) Status also consists of the
percentage of puppies per litter tested and 3) Level consists of the
number of litters that qualify for each category (Gold, Platinum and
Titanium) of LMI Key. For an example, let's say that you have four
litters qualifying for a Gold Key (50 percent of the puppies in each
litter have at least three qualifying tests per puppy). This means you
would be awarded LMI Gold Key Level 4. If you also had one litter
qualifying for LMI Platinum Key (50 percent of the puppies in the
litter must have at least five qualifying tests per puppy) then you
would be awarded the LMI Gold Key Level 4 and the Platinum Key. |
|
|
What is an SZ Keys of Victory
Certificate or an SZ LMI Keys of Victory Certificate and what can I do
with it? |
 | We award the certificate
as a tangible reward to an owner whose Shiloh achieves a Key of
Victory or a breeder who achieves an LMI Key of Victory with a litter.
A sample of the SZ Keys of Victory certificate can be found on the SZ
Keys of Victory page or click here:
http://www.shiloh-zone.net/certificate_for_keys_of_victory.htm |
 | Certificates are awarded
as jpeg files via email throughout the year and then once each year a
hard copy certificate of the highest status or level achieved during
the previous 12 months will be awarded at a designated Shiloh event or
mailed out to individuals. Note: You will only receive a new
certificate when your dog’s status or level changes. For example, if
your dog achieves Gold Status, Level 2 in 2006 and nothing changed for
2007, you would not receive a new jpeg certificate or a new hardcopy
certificate for 2007. Once officially awarded, you are free to display
the certificates wherever you like. |
|
|
My Shiloh ate its
certificate! Will you issue a new one? Do I need to fill out the
form again first? |
 | Yes your certificate can
be replaced--we will email a copy to you. All Keys of Victory
Certificates are emailed in a high resolution jpeg. format so that you
can display them on your website or print out as many copies as you
like. Hard copy (paper) certificates for the highest status and level
within that status your Shiloh has attained are issued once a year.
|
 | You will not need to fill
out the form again. Just contact us by email at
webmasters@shiloh-zone.net
and ask for a copy. |
|
|
Can the Keys of Victory be
awarded posthumously? |
 | Yes, if the dog had the
required testing done, you are welcome to submit
it for the Keys of Victory Program. |
|
